.doc files
and why they're not a good idea!

The Folly of .DOC explained...

Dot Doc is a Microsoft-specific proprietary format for saving a text file. If you have written an article, story, letter, etc, it's surely better to save it in a common format which every computer understands, rather than something that only works on Microsoft systems. There are other problems with habitual use of .doc , which I'll explain:

There is an assumption which is held by quite a lot of people that it's somehow ok to send files as ".doc". Well, it's not. Sending ".doc" files by e-mail on the assumption that it's ok, is bad. Yet some people habitually do it; Sometimes quite clever people who should know better. Often it's not their fault that they have this misguided belief about ".doc" being acceptable, as they've been fooled by propaganda and misdirection out there in the world. The blame is not upon them, but upon Microsoft, who are in my opinion treating us like fools.

Microsoft would like everyone to buy their software, and be dependent on them, and pay them lots of money on an ongoing basis. I am not keen on that idea, and I have a bottle of cheap generic champagne-substitute ready to uncork on the day Microsoft goes bust. I favour Linux, which is in my opinion a better system from a computer-science design point of view, more open in terms of libertarian freedom, and exempt from some of the ethical issues which are apparent with Microsoft.

Anyway, what's wrong with .doc files? Well the first thing is that they are not compatible with everyone's computer. In contrast .TXT (proper actual real text) files are compatible with ALL computers. ".doc" is the output of Microsoft Word, which is a proprietary piece of software produced by Microsoft. I, like many other people, have no intention of paying good money to buy a copy of Microsoft Word. Neither this year's fashion in Microsoft Word nor next year's fashion in Microsoft Word, nor the year after that etc. The style of file produced keeps on changing, so we are all expected to keep on paying good money to be able to read these Microsoft Word files. It has been known to happen that one person with more money than sense gets the latest version of Microsoft Word and then the .doc files generated on that machine are unreadable by the other machines in the office, thus putting pressure on all of the other people to "upgrade" to the later version. That is an antisocial form of marketing software. Also see the Real Linux page Why OPEN Matters

Plus, the whole thing is entirely unnecessary. There are perfectly good formats which are usable, compatible with other computers, and do not help to fund the every-expanding empire of Microsoft. If you'd like to give up smoking .doc files, then here's how to do it:

1. For any file that's plain text with no fancy formatting (italics, bold etc), send as .TXT

2. For text files with fancy bits in, send as HTML (.htm), or as an early form of rich text format which you have reason to expect the other person has something generic to read it with. Another usable format is .rtf (rich text format) which is generally compatible.

3. For photographs, use .JPG (which is surprisingly compact)

4. For images which are solid graphics, use .GIF or .PNG (.PNG is better and is free of the patent/copyright problems associated with .GIF)

The other thing that's wrong with .DOC is that it's bloatware! Like many Microsofty things, it takes up much more space than it deserves. This matters, not just because it often shows bad design, but also because when sending stuff by e-mail, it is inconsiderate to send files which are unnecessarily big! It is especially irksome to receive files which have cost money to receive and taken too long, and then to find they don't work at all because they are in this inconvenient Microsoft-specific format! Sending Microsoft Word files by e-mail is unnecessarily inefficient, when sending as .htm or .rtf is quite inefficient enough! If you think inconsiderate e-mail is OK, then what do you think about spam?

In effect it's the opposite of data-compression, as the files are bloated out to be hugely bigger than they are supposed to be. This not just say 50% bigger, or twice as big, but enormously bigger. In fact it is ridiculous! It would be laughable if it wasn't so stupid that it is so widespread.

Another problem with .doc files is that they often contain hidden information, such as the previous draft versions of the material you are writing. Effectively, all your workings-out are kept in the file in a hidden format, and can be winkled out by spies if the occasion arises. (Some people have got in trouble because their secret workings-out have been uncovered). You can eliminate this risk to privacy, but you have to know how to.

Plus, dot doc files can contain viral items hidden in amidst the bloaty structure.

So, to sum it up: .doc files are:

A few helpful links: AntiWord, which is a Risc and Linux-philosophy program written by some helpful people to try to crack .doc files, and there's a nice page calmly exposing the crass nature of the Microsoftishness involved to do with MS Word. Also I have heard that Star Office (and other open formats) can cope with some variants of .doc

Anyway, here's an example file which was sent by e-mail as .TXT and as .DOC , so you can see the difference and see how big it is in each case and also how easy (or not) it is to read if you don't have Microsoft Word. Incidentally, this file I've chosen as an example is just something I happened to have to hand at the time of publishing, and if you have an interest in the content you can see it at www.voicesforum.org.uk/po-rslts.htm . There were other files I could have used, but some of them are many megabytes, and I'd prefer to keep this page size reasonable! Notice how in the .DOC version there is a huge amount of padded-out wasted space. This all represents your time and money being wasted if you were paying to have .doc files received by e-mail.

Update: More recent Microsoft versions of this (.docx) are at least as bad as this, and yet seem to make claims about being an "open format" when it's plainly not! My advice: Avoid. Also, if someone sends you a file in .docx format, ask the people who sent it, politely, to send you a version in an open format which can be read generally. The change from .doc to .docx has made things even worse. The .docx format is to be avoided. So is typhoid, but you can be vaccinated against that!

With a .doc file, you can open it in a text editor and see the text hidden in there but visible in amongst the bloaty guff. In a .docx , the file is appears to be entirely gobbledegook.

Beware of "upgrading" to later versions of Microsoft Office, as your business could end up seriously scuppered in the long term, and you could become a Closed Office!

What about .pdf ? These aren't quite as bad as .doc or .docx , as .pdf is alleged to be an open format. But nevertheless the idea of encoding a file into a pdf just to make it look swish, is something which I don't get. There are very few reasons to want to turn a text file into a .pdf , as it takes up more room and doesn't look that much better. Is .pdf an open format? I am not entirely convinced, as they seem to want to charge money for a copy of the specification.

Anyway, back to the .doc problem...

Campaigner wins 2002 Poetry Prize

The well known mental health activist and one of the founders of Survivors Speak Out, Peter Campbell won the 1st prize of 100 in the "Martha Robinson" Poetry Competition 2002 for his poem "To Willie Emslie". 2nd prize of 50 went to Philip Newhouse and 3rd place to Sophie Goodeve (25).

To avoid any bias, the names of all those who entered were kept from the judges, with each poem only identified by a number.

In total there were 71 poems entered from (ex) service users around the UK on different topics – but a great many were on mental health themes and in particular explored what it is like to live with a mental illness. The judging panel consisted of four volunteers from National Voices Forum and the professional poet Philip Kane.
